Speculation

Evening all! Long time fan but new to the comm, lovely to meet you all, etc etc. Good to see there's somewhere to properly appreciate the magnificence that is The Kingkiller Chronicle. Just thought I'd share with the fan community something that occurred to me when I was rereading NOTW last week in preparation for getting my hands on The Wise Man's Fear (Which, by the by, was awesome)

After the Bone-Tar spill Kilvin says chaen vaen edan kote. Kvothe manages to make out chaen vaen as meaning "seven years", and Kilvin provides the full translation as "expect disaster every seven years". And then in TWMF, though we're not provided a translation this time, the word "kote" comes up again in reference to a project that's gone wrong.

I can't think why this never registered with me before, but given the level of detail in the worldbuilding, I can't believe that this word cropping up repeatedly in clear context can be an accident. And where else have we heard this word? Oh, just as the alias our hero is currently going by...

Kvothe says names are important to him. Is Kote the Siaru word for "disaster"?

Ooooh wow, nice catch! Yet more proof that I really need to read NOTW again!

I blame some fairly obsessive re-rereading while I was waiting for TWMF ;)

I'm guessing "disaster" or "great misfortune" or "really really bad thing" would all be names Kvothe would ascribe to himself, especially after whatever as-yet-to-be-named terrible thing he did which purportedly caused the current war and (purely my speculation here) got Denna killed. Guy's got a significant amount of self-loathing going on.

Ah, now my thinking was that Denna was the one he "trusted, and was betrayed" by. But I also like your theory.

My theory about Kvothe getting her killed doesn't necessarily preclude Denna betraying him. Given her nature, it wouldn't surprise me at all.
